What is an End of Life Doula?
An End of Life Doula (sometimes called a Death Doula) is a trained, compassionate support person who provides non-medical, practical and emotional care to people living with life-limiting illness, ageing, or approaching death.
Our role is to walk alongside individuals and families, offering guidance, comfort and continuity of care at a time that can often feel overwhelming.
The word doula comes from ancient Greek, meaning “to serve”. While the role has deep roots in community and family care throughout history, the modern End of Life Doula works in partnership with today’s health and aged care systems, helping to restore connection, calm and clarity to the dying process.
What we do.
End of Life Doulas support people in many ways, always guided by your wishes and circumstances. Our services may include:
- End-of-life planning and advance care conversations
- Emotional and spiritual support for individuals and families
- Guidance on what to expect during the dying process
- Creating a peaceful environment at home, in hospital or in care
- Legacy projects and memory work
- Vigil sitting and presence in the final hours
- Respite and support for carers
We honour your values, culture and beliefs. Our role is not to replace medical or clinical care, but to complement it – working alongside doctors, nurses, carers and other professionals to provide a fuller circle of support.
Why work with a Doula?
Modern healthcare often focuses on medical treatment, yet the emotional, social and spiritual needs at the end of life are just as important.
An End of Life Doula can:
- Help you and your family feel more in control and prepared
- Offer continuity of care when systems feel fragmented
- Provide a calm presence in moments of uncertainty
- Support conversations that honour dignity and choice
- Reduce feelings of isolation for both individuals and carers
